Review of "Every Beat Of The Drum" by Muriel Sedgewick

This 5 track EP was recorded in 2009 at Finlay Wells' Nutshell Music Studio in Oban, Scotland. It features five songs which were written by Ivan Drever and arranged by the band. Ivan sings and plays acoustic guitar, Andy Murray is on vocals and electric guitar, Finlay Wells plays bass, acoustic guitar and provides vocals whilst Iain Coates is responsible for drums and percussion. Finlay and Andy are also on production duty.

The Ballad of Jimmy Fry first saw light on Ivan's Solo Album "Four Walls", this is an all new recording which explores both the band setting and in particular Andy's electric guitar. The four new songs show the direction the band is taking with the anthemic "Every Beat Of The Drum". "Walk beside Your Shoes" allows the acoustic side of the band to shine through with intertwining vocals and acoustic guitars, soft, understated electric guitar and discrete percussion. "Harbour Lights" has one of those guitar riffs you can't get out of your head whilst "Stranger's Tongue" again shows off the band's acoustic excellence.

This EP is a signpost, it shows the way the band are heading and many will want to go with them if they keep up this standard. A new album is due in the Autumn, it should be well worth waiting for.
